Hiking in Intervales

Intervales is also well-known for its wonderfull karst limestone system that occurs under its forest along with the neighbouring reserve, Alto Ribeira State Park. Many caves are open to the public and can be visited at any time of the year, by arrangement within the Park. Some of the activities that can be done during your visit to the Park are described below, for more accurate information send us an email. 

 
Arcão Waterfall 
 
Grade - Moderate
Distance - 14000 meters walking
Time - Half day
 
One of the most interesting waterfall in Intervales State Park, Arcão Waterfall along with Paiva and Luminosa Caves form a circuit which the visitor can learn about environment and see the natural beauty. They are situated in a private area in the immediate surroundings of the park. The waterfall has an impressive drop of 12 meters high, which ends in a shallow pit.

Luminosa Cavern 

Grade - Moderate
Distance - 14000 meters walking
Time - Half day
 
This cave is located in the Lageado Valley, and requires a long walking to visit

Mirante Waterfall 
 
Grade - Easy 
Distance - 3000 meters walking
Time - Less than 2 hours
 
This waterfall it is one of the easiest hike in Intervales, being visited daily by day visitors Mirante Waterfall is surrounded by a well preserved primary forest , bordering the river with the presence of ferns and bromelias. The waterfall has a drop with 15m high and 3m wide, which flows into a shallow pit. The name Mirante Waterfall in Portuguese means “Waterfall of the mountain lookout”, due to its location at the base of the mountain lookout  (where you enjoy a beautiful view).

Agua Comprida Waterfall 
 
Grade - Easy 
Distance - 10000 meters walking or driving
Time - Half day walking or 1 hour driving
 
This is one of the best places for bath, it can be accessible by car or walking to reach this waterfall, there is a trail with low level of difficulty and 7 km in extension,  which takes 1h30m to get to this beautiful waterfall with a single drop of 7 meters high forming a shallow swimming hole, with crystal clear water where you can dip.


 



Mirante da Anta/View point (Self-guided Trail)

Grade - Easy
Distance - 4200 meters
Time - Less than 3 hours


This self-guided trail leads you to the highest part of the central area of the park, (1050 meters) from the top of this lookout mountain, you have a fascinating view, of the hilly territory of  of the  Paranapanema and Ribeira Valleys . The visitors enjoy this natural viewpoint as a strategic point to observe the central area of the park and a beautiful sunset in the late afternoon. Recommended as the first attraction to be visited, as it provides the visitor an overview of the park.

Colorida Cavern

Grade - Easy
Distance - 2000 meters
Time - 1 hour


This was the first cave to be open to the public in Intervales, located in the central area of the park. Accessible at all times.




Fendão Cavern

Grade - Difficult
Distance - 12000 meters walking or driving
Time - Half day


The opening of this cavern is characterized by an inclined huge gap in the rock, surrounded by a dense Atlantic Forest. From inside, it is possible to observe skylights and upper galleries that emerge through woods. The walk inside the cave extends for 1 km long in the river courseFendão Cavern is the second largest caves in Intervales and is one of the most visited by teenagers.

 
 



Paiva Cavern

Grade - Difficult
Distance - 12000 meters walking or driving
Time - Half day


This is the longest cave open to the public in Intervales, it is considered one of the most significant attractions of the park surroundings. It is 4 km in length, but only 800 m is open for the visitors. Internally, the visitor will find a hall with  more than 30m high. The name of the cave comes from the Paiva family, the traditional inhabitants who owned the land where the cave is located.
